Legislative Session

2012 Legislative Wrap Up

Fifteen percent of the delegates and senators in the General Assembly—21 of the 140 members—cast their first votes this session. In addition to the large freshman class, the evenly divided Senate adopted new organizational rules that put Republicans in charge of all of its committees. Legislators and advocacy groups, including the Medical Society of Virginia (MSV), were unsure about how the new dynamics and new committee chairmen would affect the legislative process. Ultimately, MSV successfully navigated the session and achieved its key legislative objectives.

MSV worked with legislators to advance two proactive measures this session—a bill to promote team-based care among physicians and nurse practitioners (NPs) and legislation to define surgery in the Virginia Code. Both measures easily passed the legislature and were signed into law by Gov. Bob McDonnell. MSV is grateful to the General Assembly for its favorable action on these priority issues.
